Pakistan's foreign policy has evolved from an early alignment with the US-led bloc to a diversified approach that gradually drew closer to China. Over decades, Beijing and Islamabad have built a relationship brick by brick, expanding cooperation across strategic, political, economic, and defense domains. Today, the partnership stands at its strongest point in history, underpinned not only by the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) but also by robust defense collaboration and integrated supply chains that knit the two economies together. Economically, CPEC has accelerated infrastructure development, energy projects, and industrial linkages, creating shared interests and regional connectivity. Defense ties include joint training, arms cooperation, and strategic planning, while supply chains foster deeper industrial integration and mutual resilience. Yet the relationship faces challenges, including concerns about debt sustainability, governance transparency, and the risks of over-dependence in a volatile regional environment. To sustain a sustainable and mutually beneficial trajectory, Pakistan should pursue transparent project governance, diversify financing sources, and maintain strategic flexibility in its broader foreign policy. In my view, this partnership is a pivotal driver of regional development and stability, but its benefits will hinge on prudent management, inclusive growth, and safeguarding PakistanтАЩs sovereignty and policy autonomy.
